There will probably be a restriction on RAF Lancasters flying low over the water, too.

From the BBC:

Powered vessels could be banned from small Lake District waters to avoid conflicts between sailors and swimmers.

The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) said it was carrying out a consultation on proposals to amend by-laws to prohibit the use of powered vessels on the smaller lakes including Buttermere, Grasmere and Elterwater.

The LDNPA said Windermere, Coniston, Derwentwater and Ullswater would be unaffected by the proposed changes.  A report said arguments between "drivers of electrically powered vessels and swimmers have been reported in recent years, including incidents where injury to individuals has been narrowly avoided".

The smaller lakes were more "appropriately used" for activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming, LDNPA documents said.  They added that, along with the increase in popularity of wild swimming, there has been an increase in power-driven vessels.  "An amendment to the by-laws is necessary to conserve the amenity and natural beauty of the smaller lakes and their surrounding areas and prevent nuisance or damage to the smaller lakes," the report concluded.

For more than two centuries, railway enthusiasts, engineers and scientists have tried to solve the mystery of Box tunnel, near Bath.

Nonsense: Box Tunnel didn't open until June 1841.

Feels more like "this is due to engineering work that will have to start earlier than expected" - but we haven't got a code for that.

Two WMR trains are shown as being changed - last one into Foregate St from Birmingham, and the first one out of Great Malvern tomorrow morning. But that's due to "problems with the signalling system".

Note that GWR are currently replacing STAR TIS with TTK, an inherently portable system.
I have a strong feeling the "Stations Change" programme is lurking in the background still.

To be fair, GWR may have been alerted that, "When we started work, we discovered there is much more actually needing to be done than we had planned, so it won't all be done within the original timescale".

I'm perhaps being charitable here.

How someone managed to clout that Melksham bus stop I don't know.

Devizes, not Melksham.

09/04/25 20:52 London Paddington to Great Malvern due 23:13 will be terminated at Worcester Shrub Hill.
It will no longer call at Worcester Foregate Street, Malvern Link and Great Malvern.
This is due to engineering works not being finished on time.

Interesting that GWR knew yesterday lunchtime that engineering works this evening would not be completed in time.  Very odd

Plans submitted for the first permanent office building at Brabazon

9th April 2025
2 min read
Plans have been submitted for a new Grade-A office building located next to the new train station at Brabazon.

The station office building will be the first permanent commercial space at Brabazon and marks the next step in delivering a thriving new, mixed-use neighbourhood for North Bristol.

Designed by AHR Architects, the eight-storey state-of-the-art building will deliver of 123,330 square feet of much-needed Grade- A office space for Bristol.

The building will be located above the new train station that will connect visitors and employees to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes.

Employees will also benefit from the amenities that they would expect of city centre office space. There will be a ground-floor retail-dining space, spilling out onto a landscaped public square and over 100 cycle spaces and shower facilities to encourage office staff to walk, run or cycle to work. And with the new Arena coming soon, the offices at Brabazon will offer all the lifestyle advantages needed to attract and retain high-skilled talent.

The ground floor will also house a manned train ticket office, making it just the third station to be staffed in the region after Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway.

Sustainability is at the heart of the plans, with the building targeting EPC A rating, BREEAM Outstanding and NABERS 5*A rating, as well as NABERS a WiredScore Platinum certification for connectivity.

As part of the approved masterplan for Brabazon, this thriving new neighbourhood will see the delivery of creative workspaces, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as over 6,500 new homes, up to 2,000 beds for student accommodation, the largest new public park in the Southwest for 50 years, and the supersonic new YTL Arena.

Seb Loyn, Planning & Development Director at YTL Developments said: “The first new Grade-A office space at Brabazon is a landmark moment for the new neighbourhood. Located next to the new train station at Brabazon, it will provide the area’s world-leading commercial cluster with the space, connectivity and opportunity to grow and expand.”

YTL Developments has submitted the planning application for the new office building this week. Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to complete in early 2028.

Anyone know why the Full Business case for the Portishead line which was due to be signed off March/April, has been put back to
july 2025... as reported by the Portishead railway group website ?

The only place I'ce spotted that date is on the 'Timescales' page, here: https://www.portisheadrailwaygroup.org/timescales.html

Has that been updated recently?

There's an entire thread to be had on... suboptimum placement of bus stops owing to the pressure from traffic. The continued lack of provision of a stop at the GWSR's racecourse station got my goat. Closer to home, some of Bath's London Road stops aren't really placed to meet the needs of people who would use them.

How someone managed to clout that Melksham bus stop I don't know. I do have a photo from Devizes of a vehicle, having misjudged the turn by a set of the bus stops there, with its wheels off the ground, the driver hit a knuckle fast enough to run up on it and ground it.

Bus or ferry links covers where you can buy a through ticket from train to bus.

There is for example a melksham to Padstow (PDT) ticket off peak single £63.70. The freedom of Southwest ticket isn’t valid for the bus link from Bodmin parkway to Padstow. Screen shot of itinerary

This is not intended to exclude rail replacement

That's quite a catalogue. Good point on Bath's bus station seating, the external seating there was suffering and was removed a few years ago. I've sent a request via Fixmystreet to install new.

Which reminded me... no-one ever did get a handle on the acid etch tagging of bus stop & station glass and it's now everywhere.

Also, the people who took over the enquiry desk space are now running a cafe in there to supplement their other stuff.

Thanks for this, thought it was me. Now I know this I've just run the searches again and it's easier to see what's going on.

The issue with the cost seems to be SWR as the fare setter, and the off-peak/super off-peak structure that they introduced in the years since the through trains ran, which has put the prices up.

The £48.35 day return fare allows a 10:20 am arrival at Waterloo and return travel in the evening peak.

Later in the day, that day return fare is undercut by the super off-peak period return at £37.60 (with the return half valid for a month but unlike the off peak day return not valid in the evening peak).

Someone has managed to run into the bus shelter on the bus island too ... and that's got barriers all around it.

Bus infrastructure far from impressive at the moment ... a trip to the RUH in Bath yesterday and the main stop for the routes to the hospital, on Dorchester Street, has no seating available - very silly when that's the very stop that needs seating as there will be a higher proportion of people less able to stand who will be waiting around than for other buses.

Many bus stops have new timetables and better signs that they use to, but this classic rescued from the hedge lies - the 272 ceased calling here in 2018. The D3 called for a further 2 years - at which point First pulled out.  Faresaver's 271 outward from Bath still calls until mid afternoon (the last two services skip this stop - so last bus from Bath is at 15:15) and then loops back into Bath, and there's also journeys from here on the x34 route to Chippenham in the morning and to Trowbridge in the afternoon.  If you know about them, good ... and around 10 people got on to the x34 to Trowbridge when I was on it the other day, which I supposes goes to illustrate how un-necessary the sign is anyway for regular passengers.

And finally - a bus stop that has disappeared in road improvements.   There used to be a stop both sides of the road here - 2 buses an hour to Bath and one to Devizes.  But an extra new road has been opened, with a new roundabout just behind where the picture was taken, and in order to get to the new bus stop you have to cross multiple busy roads.   Behind the bus is The Spa area of Melksham - perhaps 80 to 100 people live there and just behind the hedge is a major housing area of a few years vintage and the access path from it to the stop.   Probably doesn't matter for the people there - I suspect most of them have cars ;-)

Does this mean the works have been completed?
I have no idea of the targeted completion date

The place has given me flashbacks of New Street of old, such a dark and gloomy place

Sadly not completed yet but a sure fire sign of the work progressing steadily from one end to the other.
