We had a weekend guest here in Nailsea who was inconvenienced on her journey home this afternoon by the emergency bridge work near Cardiff Central.
Altogether, not a good Bank Holiday weekend for the railways.

I would also like to see a similar chart for miles actually driven by each age group. I would suspect that people in the age group 17-24 drive a lot more miles that people aged 86 and over.
I agree. I am now retired, in the '66 to 70' group (eek!
) and I drive relatively few miles these days. Local shopping trips in the car to collect 'heavy stuff', taking recycling up to our local civic amenity site, and occasional journeys into Bristol for medical appointments and to Cirencester to visit my father.My eyesight was tested recently and was found, somewhat oddly, to be rather better than my previous prescription, so new spectacles had to be purchased.

Best-loved railway art unveiled after global vote
A global vote has unveiled a shortlist of the UK's best-loved railway artwork to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway.
Twenty paintings have been selected, nine of which are held at the National Railway Museum in York.
The public has now been invited to choose an outright winner to be announced on 9 June, the birthday of rail pioneer George Stephenson.
Shortlisted artwork includes paintings by 14 artists, such as renowned railway painter Terence Cuneo.

Given that GWR Twitter packs up and goes home at 1900 these days, what help/advice is available to travellers on a day when once again the decreptitude of the infrastructure between Reading & Paddington causes a complete meltdown?
Not defending GWR here, but I don’t think there was much advice they could offer. Almost the entire service far and wide across the GWR network was shot to pieces because of this major infrastructure failure this afternoon.Thoughts with the passengers and staff who are still stranded this evening. This really was a bad one on such a major travel day.

The graph is interesting in that at the age groups are not quite equal in number or years covered - although that's not misleading because it's per billion miles driven, and not absolute numbers. Ideally, the 17-24 age group of 8 years should be split into two groups.

The 17:50 from Gloucester via Melksham was cancelled at 18:05 (the train sitting in the platform with passengers in it waiting to go - so I did not get into Melksham at 19:09 as per plan "A"
I took the 18:10 from Gloucester which also runs via Trowbridge to Westbury (via Bristol, this one) with the intent of changing into the 20:12 from Trowbridge back to Melksham - however that was cancelled at very late notice (about 5 past
so I did not get to Melksham at 20:21 which was plan "B"The help point told me that I should wait for the 21:22 train which would bring ne into Melksham at 21:32 - plan C. As far as he knew it would run but he couldn't promise anything. He suggested I call GWR if I wanted to be more certain. I did, but they were unable to give me any re-assurance. They told me to wait and see if it ran - and if it was cancelled, I should then take a taxis and try and claim for it. They were unable to explain why they only told the public that they had no staff for the 20:12 a couple of minutes before it was due ...

As a 78 year old I must confess that I do, at times, get a little weary of the calls for various clampdowns on "old" drivers. I have had cataracts in both eyes and a detached retina - yet my vision (unaided) is 20/20 (or, as we must say now, 6/6). Oh - and a clean licence. Yes, the coroner was quite right with his comments over these tragic cases. However, he could have made a stronger case to save far more lives by calling for a ban on under 25s from carrying passengers for a considerable period after passing the driving test- just to name one action. There are plenty more.
Looking at the graph below (from Gov.Uk)................and perhaps being somewhat simplistic, it might appear that you have to reach the age of 86 before you become as dangerous on the roads as a 17 - 24 year old. It seems that I am roughly 3 times as "safe" as a 20 year old - tell my insurance company that !!

It doesn't have to be a major outage to stop all departures. The stranded train policy is brought in. Wherever possible trains are stopped in platforms and don't move until the problem is resolved. This is to prevent passengers self evacuating onto open railway lines.
There was a rule book alteration many years ago, a new reason for a driver to be authorised to pass a signal at danger, proceed into a platform where another train is stopped, think for example Keysham or Nailsea.
Today's 1530 BTM Paddington had a delight 2 hours at Chips and Ham, 1530 Paddington WSM is currently 222 mins late!

The West Somerset Railway plc is pleased to announce that the iconic, world-famous locomotive, No 60103 Flying Scotsman will be hauling passenger trains on West Somerset metals in June and July 2025!
Following agreement with the National Railway Museum and Northern Steam Operations, Flying Scotsman will arrive in West Somerset near the end of June. Flying Scotsman will then run services between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead on 28th, 29th, 30th June and 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th July, with static displays of the locomotive available at Bishops Lydeard on 26th, 27th June and 3rd – 7th, 13th & 14th July.
On the days where services behind Flying Scotsman will be running, we will be offering excursions behind the Flying Scotsman for one full length journey of the line and a return journey behind one of our home fleet locomotives.
Further evening excursions will also be available on the evenings of 28th & 29th June, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 11th & 12th July for a full return trip behind the Flying Scotsman from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead with various ticket options including travel only, fish and chips, afternoon teas or on board the Quantock Belle Dining Train to enjoy a 4-course meal.
The static days offer the opportunity to see Flying Scotsman up close, including an afternoon tea in the station house garden with the locomotive as your backdrop. With so many ticket options we are sure to have an affordable option for all.

The Yeovil Heritage Centre is beginning its South Chord Project, aiming to complete the schene started by the GWR in 1865, probably not Brunel however.
A lost section of Brunel's Great Western Railway is being brought to life by volunteers, more than 160 years after work first started.
A team at Yeovil Railway Centre have been busy laying a new track extension as part of Project South Chord, which will also see a brand new station put in place.
The heritage railway, which currently runs steam and diesel-hauled passenger trains along a short section of line, is looking to raise £100,000 to finish the project.
Neil Coultas, project manager for the scheme, said the "unique" project was "very much linking back to the past and very much in line with keeping history alive".
The railway centre currently has a third of a mile of running line.
"We are a little bit of the Great Western Railway living on, which is fantastic," Mr Coultas said.
Due to a period of economic downturn the original track was never laid. Thanks to the work of heritage rail enthusiasts volunteering on site, that is about to change.
"When I'm working down there, I like to think back to the navvies of 1864, those guys who did all the hard work preparing the track bed," Mr Coultas said.
"We are finally, finally putting some track down there - building on their legacy."

Second day of rail disruption for 'urgent' repairs
Rail services are experiencing major disruption with journeys cancelled or suspended due to urgent repairs needed on a bridge on Sunday and into Monday.
The work near Cardiff Central station has affected a number of routes run by Great Western Railway, Transport for Wales and CrossCountry, according to National Rail.
Rail replacement transport is being organised between Newport and Cardiff Central, and Cardiff Central and Caerphilly.
"Major disruption is expected until the end of the day on Monday 21 April," said National Rail. It said routes affected included:
* CrossCountry between Nottingham / Birmingham New Street / Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central
* Great Western Railway between Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central, and also between Bristol Parkway and Swansea

The minimum notice period, as you say in your post, is three periods (4 weeks x3), so 12 weeks or just under 3 months. Not sure why you then suggest it'll be 6 months (in practice?)
And as far as I can see in the legislation, there's nothing to prevent those three periods ending at the core period end date, rather than starting then. So it seems possible to transfer at the end of core period.
