2 looks like somewhere in USA because of the way the locomotive numbers are displayed on the angled boxes just behind the chimney.

Probably ... This is certainly a workshop of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, but there is some disagreement on where.

A sharper image of that photograph appears on Flickr (Tom Wigley), and following the reference data it was copied from Shorpy, and then onto Pinterest, wheelsmuseum, and The Guide to New Mexico Architecture - the section on the Albuquerque Rail Yards of the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway. As it gives no further source reference, you might think the one on Shorpy is the original. But no - it is in the Library of Congress (and like almost all US government material it is public domain).

The Guide to New Mexico Architecture has it as:

Erecting Bay of the Machine Shop with a Full House of Locomotives to be Repaired. Looking West. Seeking information about photographer and date.

There are other photos here of the Erecting Bay of the Machine Shop of the Albuquerque Rail Yards, which do look like the same building. But when you look closely there are some small differences. As this was a modular construction, using factory-made frames, with standard equipment including things like the gantry cranes, I can believe that the AT&SFRR built two nearly identical ones in Albuquerque (much of which survives) and San Bernardino (which was entirely demolished).

17:57 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street due 20:11 will no longer call at Hanborough, Charlbury, Shipton and Kingham.
It is being delayed at London Paddington.
This is due to a road vehicle colliding with a bridge.

This train is formed from the stock of 1P34 15:17 Foregate St to London Paddington (17:29), started from Shrub Hill +12, held at Charlbury (+29) and into Paddington +44.
1W34 17:57 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street (20:11) departed +27 and, after skipping stops from Oxford to Moreton (+26), was held at Evesham (+33) and arrived Foregate St +38.

The next one, 1W36 1857 London Paddington to Great Malvern, departed +11, was delayed to Reading (+24), arrived Shrub Hill +31 and Worcester Foregate Street +42, and was cancelled thereafter.

Came across this on social media this morning.

Just over 13 kilometres of the line in total, about 6.5 kilometres either side of Kiltimagh Station is being used by Velorail. Using cycles adapted for rail.

Some exceptionally complicated shunting moves to .....
- move Clan Line's support coach into a siding;
- turn Clan Line;
- move supporting diesel, 47848, from one end to the other;
- use local diesel shunter to propel support coach to the 'London' end;
- finally move Clan Line to the 'London' end.

508 trains in the planned Spring 2020 timetable. Schedule reduced during the month so that 472 appeared on immediate (day by day) departure boards. 13 of those cancelled, 35 significnatly late, 59 late but by less than 5 minutes, and 365 ran on time.   

Running rate 97.2%
Ppm measure 89.8%

This came up on my feed today four and half years later.   How sad to see how we badly we are doing to reliability now.   Running rate was 97% and has dropped to 79% over the last four weeks.   No - that is not a typo - the digits are reversed.

Correct.

I managed to get to Yeovil Railway Centre from Tisbury just as the 'Clan Line' hauled Sherborne Christmas Carol railtour arrived, where it was fed, watered and turned. The Railway Centre and its cafe were open for the railtour, catering for the large crowd of enthusiasts, and some passengers from the train, there to see the various shunting moves.

I met up with fellow forum member Phil Wakely here. I think I might have been papped...

Whilst member 'Clan Line' was out photting Britannia, I was out photting their namesake locomotive, 35028, on the annual 'Sherborne Christmas Carols' railtour (London Victoria to Sherborne). Seen arriving into Salisbury and again arriving into Yeovil Junction (Heritage Platform), where Clan Line was fed, watered and turned, prior to returning to Sherborne to pick up the carollers.

Trains: £2bn to re-open Carmarthen to Bangor lines

Re-opening railway lines that were shut in the 1960s and have left large towns without a direct rail link would cost £2bn, Transport for Wales has said.

TfW looked at the line between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth, Ceredigion and Afon Wen and Bangor in Gwynedd.

Chief executive James Price said it would be "very costly" to develop and "difficult" to implement.

Campaigners have said it was unclear how the rail operator got that figure as all studies had not yet been done.

Under the Welsh Labour government's co-operation deal with Plaid Cymru, TfW was asked to examine how transport links between the north and south could be developed

That included a potential travel corridor along the coast from Carmarthen to Bangor, with TfW looking at re-connecting the disused rail routes between Bangor and Afon Wen - about 28 miles.

Since the closure of the Aberystwyth to Carmarthen line, taking the train between the two towns - which are just 49 miles apart - takes seven hours.

Owned by the Welsh government, TfW has been responsible for train services across much of Wales since 2018.



In a letter to a Senedd committee, Mr Price said TfW looked at a "wide-ranging assessment to examine how accessibility and connectivity can be improved on the west coast of Wales".

He said the options offered shorter journey times but were "very costly to develop and implement".

A north to south rail scheme would "likely to cost circa £2bn and would take over 10 years to deliver".

He added: "Therefore, these are all difficult to realise, even as a light rail scheme. The case for Bangor - Caernarfon/Afon Wen was stronger due to shorter route length and higher demand."

Transport expert Prof Stuart Cole said the plans did not offer value for money.

He said: "As someone who lives in Llanelli, nothing would please me more than to go by train via Carmarthen to Aberystwyth. But it doesn't have a sufficiently high rate of return in financial terms.

"The number of people living in the area of the planned route is too small for an investment of this size."

People in Carmarthen supported the idea, but questioned whether it was viable.

Margaret Jones said: "I know it makes sense for the businesses each end but it's a lot of money to pay for that especially as there are so many people living on the streets... that money could be better spent."

Branwen Evans said it would be "great" if it went ahead, but doubts it will "as it will cost too much".

Former Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price believes it could be paid for from spending on the HS2 rail project in England.

"We can do that of course if HS2 is re-registered as being an England-only project, which it is," the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Member of the Senedd said.

"Even HS2 as it now exists we would get sufficient money invested in Wales so we could achieve this national important project."

Mark Davies from campaign group Traws Link Cymru said he was "surprised" at the comments made by TfW.

He said: "It should be noted that scoping and feasibility studies are yet to be completed for the northern section of the line and therefore it is not clear how TfW have arrived at the £2bn total cost."

With Swansea-Manchester meant to be 5 carriages on most services from the timetable change in a few weeks are TFW confident that they are finally able to deliver this? According to the FAQ's on the website it sounds like they are.

Also after looking at RTT it seems the arrival from Manchester loses 3 carriages at Swansea with the 2 car going to West Wales and the 3 car just sits in Swansea for an hour until the next 2 car comes from West Wales.  The 0945 arrival at Swansea (from Crewe in this instance) then sits there until the next departure to Manchester at 1054.    It appears that the few trains that still go from West Wales to Cardiff the hours they dont go to Manchester will 2 cars throughout which could see 2 cars on some busy Cardiff-Milford services.

I hope the all-day couple/uncouple arrangement works out in practice. A Sprinter covering something would snarl it up!

I wonder if there's any scope to swap the arrangement so the 3 car portion goes past Swansea and then ends up on Cardiffs in between. With most other routes in theory going up to an appropriate new baseline train length (CDF-HHD 3 car, CDF-MAN 5 car etc) the off-hour Cardiff-West journeys are a bit of an anomoly being stuck with 2 cars. Swapping the arrangement would mean more 3 car (with Standard Plus) diagrams in total, as some will be locked into West Wales cycles at any one time. I can see why the extras aren't attaching/detaching at Swansea - it would otherwise involve having two sets couple/uncouple movements going on at the same time each hour, and either very tight movements or having overlapping layovers, none of which is good for resilience. Maybe once things have settled down the 'extras' could have a separate routine of attaching/detaching a 2 car set at CMN to make 4 cars.

Several 153 subs today, it seems, and a 150 on at least one Ebbw Vale diagram, which was doing the stepping-up thing that suggests availability is tight. So I am a bit concerned about how there will suddenly be an increase in availability! Especially with 150s starting to be withdrawn now AIUI. 756s are starting to appear; only 1 diagram on today, as far as I could see, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a dramatic increase in the next few weeks. That would help to cascade some 150s to the Valleys routes currently operated with 153s, which would then help to cover the SWML locals etc until 197 availability improves. Most of the Pembrokes seem to be 197s atm, for example, so they could be released if covered by 153s per previous plans.

I would hope that all diagrams involved in the Manchester-West Wales-Cardiff-West Wales-Manchester workings would be prioritised for 197s.  If a Sprinter does happen to end up on a working in an emergency I would guess it would have to work as a 2 car Sprinter throughout the diagram with no split (unless another Sprinter could be found).

It would have been better if the 3 car had continued to West Wales and the 2 car sat in Swansea for an hour however i guess there isnt enough capacity with the 3 cars to do that.   About 4 of the 'Cambrian' 197s have now entered service and hopefully the remaining 3 cars (currently 2 outstanding) will be in service soon but even with with the extra units they still seem to struggle.

Im unsure which working on the Maesteg and Ebbw Vale lines are booked Sprinters or booked 197s. I know the Newport-Ebbw Vales are Sprinters and often seem to be a single 153 (good use of stock when they are short as I think officially they are booked 2 cars) but there are quite a few 150s and pairs of 153s that turn up on Maesteg and Ebbw Vale which makes me wonder if some are booked as such.

Personally I think post Dec TT change if they are short of 197s it would be better for Ebbw Vale-Maesteg and Swanline-Pembroke Dock to be subbed for Sprinters before anything else.  With the new trains on the Valleys there should be more spare 150s around to hopefully cover and keep the 197s where they need to be. 

Also I understand the 5th MK4 diagram is supposed to start with the new timetable (0530 Swansea to Manchester etc) so that should free up another 197.  Whether it actually happens is another thing.
