It's fascinating to follow the route of, just for example, the long-gone Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Railway.

I've just discovered the following excellent resource for anyone interested in tracing the route of a long closed railway line. It also maps current lines.
http://www.railmaponline.com/
The lines are overlaid onto Google Maps so you can get a fairly good impression of how development has happened on existing alignments. It gives a good overview of the problems faced by campaigns to re-open some lines.
According to the designer of the website, it is still a work in progress, but it looks very good so far.
