Edinburgh - man killed in collision with bus, Saturday 2 November 2024 Posted by Chris from Nailsea at 19:27, 7th November 2024 |
From the BBC:
Police name man killed in Edinburgh bus incident
Police have named a man who died from catastrophic injuries after being hit by a bus in Edinburgh city centre.
Michael Leneghan, 74, was killed in the city’s busy Cowgate area on Saturday, in front of people on a street packed with late night bars and nightclubs.
Police Scotland urged the public not to repost images or videos from the scene out of respect for his family.
Mr Leneghan's family thanked the public and emergency services for their response and asked for privacy.
Mr Leneghan had been on foot at the time of the incident. Officers set up a cordon covering a large area of the street in the aftermath.
Police also put up sheets on the South Bridge to screen off the view of the Cowgate below.
Sgt Paul Ewing, of the Edinburgh road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident. We have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time and work is ongoing to check public and private CCTV footage."
It is understood several people witnessed the incident before bars, clubs and hotels within the cordon were closed early.
Police Scotland said its investigation was ongoing.
Images and videos from the scene were shared widely on social media, despite police warnings against viewing or reposting the content.
In a statement, Mr Leneghan's family said: “We wish to thank all the members of the public and emergency services involved. We would now ask for privacy at this time.”

My highlighting: that is really inappropriate behaviour.

The man was apparently decapitated. His head ended up some distance from his body.
Some Halloween revellers allegedly thought the head was some sort of Halloween prop. It was this interaction that was filmed, photographed and shared on social media.

The 74-year-old was hit by the single decker in the city's busy Cowgate area on Saturday at about 19:25 .
That's hardly 'late night': Please, people, do show some respect to the deceased, their family and friends.

Edited out the 'late night'.

When posting on threads such as this where someone has, sadly, met a violent death, please just consider what effect it would have on you to read the more upsetting details if you were partner / family / friend. That's a general guideline that's been quietly applied by the admin / moderator team in a number of cases in the past; we are sometimes aware of rather more ... sometimes a difficult call.

The details I posted and words used were just the same as used by many mainstream media outlets. Friends and relatives of the man who died are far more likely to see those stories than my post on a limited reach forum.
That said, if mods/admins feel that the details are too upsetting for the public facing parts of this forum then the topic can of course be moved to a limited access board.

Perhaps anything more than a Journeycheck post ought to be into the frequent posters section, thus removing much 'public access viewing'.
