The chap at Boots dropped my prints - can you put them in order?
Posted by grahame at 15:16, 28th September 2024

My roll of 24 25, processed as a rushed job from yesterday and today, and the prints got dropped.  Can you help me put them back in order please?   Starting from home in Melksham, I am now waiting my return train home at the north of Bristol station with just about the worst possible service

Hmm.

I'm not able to put all of them in sequence, and without reading the various station signs and clues in your pictures (which would be cheating!), I can tell you that 7 is Parson Street, 13 is Bath Spa and 22 is Bedminster.

None of them are Taunton.

Was about to write Taunton does not feature in this batch of photos Chris to save you looking

Thanks, Timmer - that's a great weight off my mind!

Just to 'bump' this topic again - 10 is Bristol Temple Meads.

24 is, I think, taken from Bristol Bridge: I used to work (for 11 years) in the office building (120 Redcliff Street) just off right centre of your picture.

Are there any younger forum members out there wondering what all this "roll of 25" "chap at Boots" business refers to!

Probably.

They won't know what Gillette razor blades are, either.

Time passes.

8 is really annoying me: I should so clearly know that, being a local, but I just can't place it.

8 looks like the front of Montpelier Station.  Trouble is, the challenge is more fiendish than that as working out the chronological order is something of a headscratcher.... especially after all the heady excitement of the Ashley Down Station opening.

We had a similar scenario with a 19 year old family member just the other day when I mentioned how people gave greater consideration to and placed greater value on, the pictures that they took when there were "rolls of film" which could take a week or more to get developed.

I wondered. And, yes, I am sure there are such members.  These were the days of analogue rather than digital photography, where light was translated to photosensitive chemical reactions using expensive silver on a clear medium which came in a long strip held in a light sensitive cassette that was taken to a chemist to process from a 35mm wide original up to a zoomed size on a specialist machine.

Number 8 is indeed Montpelier.   Yes, the challenge is a fiendish one.  I started at home, and posted from Shirley's where the train I had arrived on had just shut its engines down.  In order to make the first public train to Ashley Down, I stayed close to the main Bristol station it started from, and from there took a couple of excursions the afternoon before through the 'burbs - first to the south and second to the north, then as it got dark took a walk into the city.

AFTER  the quiz was posted I took a walk along the beach and though the countryside to what is now a remote spot about which I will post in a. few minutes - but obviously that's not in the pictures that "got dropped".

Period Fireplaces Ltd, who are based at Montpelier Station, store their slate and marble in a compound they have created in front of the rather war-torn remnants of the station building. They are very good at repairing old fireplaces and hearths, though these days a lot of their work revolves around wood-burners.

Since I was merely confirming the identity of 8, I’m now going to put in a bid for 5 being Lawrence Hill (Damien’s rather louche brother). Hopefully these steps will be replaced soon under an Access for All scheme; they’re awkward enough if you’re able-bodies!

The young lady with the harp was - demonstrably she showed - able bodied.  I would agree though that those steps should soon be replaced. That will make it so much easier for people transporting harps by train, which is a part of "all" in "access for all" which we so rarely consider.

Note for all - I have NOT put a "one go each" on this set of pictures; in some ways the opposite as I'm asking you to put them into some semblance of order!

Even given information about some of the mysterious moving about involved, I'm not sure the question as posed is answerable, at least where going out and back via the same route is involved. However, with more than half the places named, I'll have a stab at sequencing those (all at stations except *):

23. Melksham*
13. Bath Spa
5. Lawrence Hill
21. Filton Abbey Wood
17. Bedminster
7. Parson Street
19. Parson Street
14. Nailsea & Backwell
24. Bristol*
10. Bristol Temple Meads
9. Ashley Down
3. Stapleton Road
4. Portway park & ride
8. Montpelier
16.St Andrews Road
12. Severn Beach
6. Severn Beach*

Can you help me put them back in order please?

I have just realised! The correct answer is "Yes Grahame. If you look at the small folder that they handed to you at Boots, you will see that there's another pocket on the opposite side to the one from which you dropped the prints, where you will find the negatives in a sheet, sheets or strips which show you what order you took them in"

Always strange (to me at least) to reflect that its negative** was physically present when a photo was taken.

Only one - No. 6 - is wrong; I mislead you because I had stopped for another Coffee too.  The picture shows a correct test of my software geolocation work.

1, 2, 11, 15, 18, 20, 22 and 25 yet to identify!

A lot of doubling back and forth - will fill you in on the real order if I can remember later!

I'm going to suggest, somewhat cautiously, that 11 is the pedestrian access at Bedminster and 25 is the concourse at Bristol Temple Meads.

20. is the Bristol-bound platform at Keynsham.

Ah, now 18 is fiendish - it’s not a railway signal! It’s at Redcliffe Bascule Bridge, and is/was presumably used in connection with the opening and closing of the bridge.

Argh!  Of course it is - I should have remembered that, from my days with Severnside CRP.

Complete log of my journeys on Friday and Saturday - some pictures taken from the train

Melksham [23] - Bath (bus)
[13] Bath Spa - via [20] - Bristol Temple Meads
Bristol - Nailsea and Backwell [1]
[14] Nailsea - Parson Street [7]
[19] Parson Street - Bedminster (Bus) [6]
[22] [15] and [17] Bedminster - Stapleton Road
Stapleton Road - Filton Abbey Wood [2]
[21] Filton - Bristol Temple Meads [25]
(walk around via Bristol [24]  and Redcliffe Bridges [18])

[10] Bristol Temple Meads - Ashley Down (first public service)
Ashley Down - Stapleton Road
Stapleton Road - Ashley Down [9]
Ashley Down - Montpelier (walk) [8]
Montpelier - via [3] - Lawrence Hill [5]
Lawrence Hill - Portway Parkway
[4] Portway Parkway - Sea Mills
Sea Mills - via [11] and [16] - Severn Beach [12]
Severn Beach - Pilning (walk via New Passage)
Pilning - Swindon
Swindon - Melksham

The health app on my phone tells me I walked 8,569 steps on the Friday and 22,037 on the Saturday, with step lengths between 46 and 80 cms - let's average that to 60 cms so that's  5 kms on Friday and just over 13 kms on Saturday, not all of which was between Pilning village and Pilning Station

Edited to add in picture numbers

Way back in the past, I *have* done (and I nearly did the other week when I was coming home from the SBC offices where it stops nearly outside). However,  the trains is much quicker and I can work on my laptop on the train or while waiting for the train.  There have been recent improvements in the buses but it's also been two hourly services without a brilliant connection.

The other Swindon to Melksham route is Swindon - Chippenham by train and then by bus; there are 6 buses as day from Chippenham Railway Station to Melksham, from 14:46 to 17:36 Monday to Friday (3 Saturday and 9 on Sundays from 09:25 to 18:25 which started a few weeks ago) so that sometimes makes sense.   And there is even a (single) bus from outside our home at 07:45 on Monday to Friday to Chippenham Railway Station!
