And the name next year will be ...

From the Daily Post

A station on a beautiful North Wales rail route to set to return to a name it last used 50 years ago. Despite its relatively small size the market town of Llanrwst has two train stations.

Its original one is situated towards the north of the town and was opened in 1863 as part of the Conway and Llanrwst Railway. Being the only stop in town it was named Llanrwst Railway Station.

This station was renamed Llanrwst and Trefriw in April 1884 following the formal opening of the Gower pedestrian road to Trefriw in May 1881. But was back to Llanrwst in 1974 under British Rail.

Then, after the opening of a new more central station (Llanrwst) in 1989, it became Llanrwst North, and later North Llanrwst (hope everyone is still keeping up).

Now though, following a campaign the name will become North Llanrwst and Trefriw. Senedd member for Aberconwy Janet Finch-Saunders announced the news.

The change was wanted to show that the station is an ideal place to get off the train to travel on to Trefriw by foot or bike - with the hope it will attract more visitors on public transport.

Is there anywhere else that has changed its name more often?

My local station has some previous for changing it's name, more than once.

Ah, happy memories of trying to get a contractor to spell the station names correctly on the shiny new Crossrail ticket machines when TfL first took over some GWR stations pre-Elizabeth line. So many ways for the non-Welsh speakers of far away Surrey to get it wrong.  Whaddya mean, only one vowel?  I think there may have been a long-unnoticed typo when the station was last renamed and that was still in the file supplied to them by RDG.  At one stage Llanrwst was spelt wrongly in two different ways on the buttons!

The bit about travelling on to Trefriw by foot or bike appears to be because the only direct road access is via a ford, presumably with a footbridge.  By car Llanrwst station is best.

I'm inclined to think that any compass point in a station name should use the order [Place] [Direction] unless the area served is actually called for instance North Llanrwst, which it isn't so far as I can tell from the OS map.  A station name can end up being adopted by the local area though, so that might happen.

...Slight pause before posting to check I've not mis-spelt Llanrwst anywhere in this...

I've no problem with that: grahame does it all the time. I just follow his posts, tidying up where necessary.
